Life lately: Summer musings

Summer makes most people happy but I think that by now you know that I can only tolerate temperatures of 30C happily. Anything above that and I turn into the worst grump imaginable. We've already had two major heatwaves, both of them lasting well over ten days. But the temperature is tolerable right now so I'll leave it at that.

I've been away from my blog for a while again which makes me wonder where I want to go from here.

The future of this blog

To be honest, I no longer know whether this blog has a future. Readership keeps dwindling and I seem to have neither the time nor the inclination to do anything about it - which is sad, after all these years but, like I've said in the past, people are more inclined to read blogs that offer some advice or information rather than those that exist solely for the joy of making connections. Maybe I'm wrong but it sure feels like that right now.

Sincerely Loree: Mdina, Malta

So many people whose blogs I loved to read no longer update them any more and it has left me feeling strangely stranded. Other people's motivation and creativity helped fuel my own. I feel as parched as   Maltese field at the beginning of August after 4 or more months of drought - not a good thing.

Writing

Believe it or not I am finding it harder to write. My thoughts seem very fragmented and writing at length about a single subject is becoming harder. I've taken up micro-journaling because a couple of sentences every so often is all I can manage at the moment. I am finding it strangely liberating and it is teaching me to be concise.

Reading

My reading is progressing at a steady rate. I have read 27 out of the 35 books that I pledged to read during 2022. I'm running our of books now so I see a book-shopping spree on my horizon. Once again, I have read many books inspired by WW2 but it is time for me to pick up other genres. Reading only helps one grow when we pick up books outside our comfort zone. Otherwise. like all things, it becomes a mundane activity rather than one which expands the horizon of our imagination and knowledge.

All the reading I do leaves little time for blogging, unfortunately. I haven't even done the first two quarterly posts about the books I have read. Shame on me. One more thing I need to put on my 'to do' list.

Sincerely Loree: Rabat, Malta

Photography

Photography, like writing, requires the right frame of mind and heaps of motivation, both of which I'm sorely lacking right now. I've already talked about Malta's over-development and it just keeps getting worse. Village cores have been changed beyond recognition, more of the countryside keeps being eaten up by ugly blocks of 'apartments' that look like modern slums and it seems I am constantly taking photos of the same things, the ones which haven't changed for centuries (and which I've randomly scattered throughout today's post). They're all taken with my phone so please forgive and blurred edges.

Sincerely Loree: Rabat, Malta

What next?

So, what next, dear readers? Perhaps I'll use these slow and sultry summer months to recharge my batteries and come back with bigger and better ideas. Or perhaps I'll just give up. I really don't know at this point. All I know is that all the algorithms in place on Google and Instagram and everywhere else on the internet have killed creativity and since they ensure that only the 'big fish' are found by search engines. Everyone else is forgotten. It's a sorry state of affairs indeed.

  1. Loree,
Exploring your blog's future, I feel, is normal, and a good thing to do.
Blogging isn't what it use to be. At the end of the school year. visitor counts always drop.
I've been considering your questions as well. The pandemic changes life flows in ways I'm not sure of yet. The violence in the world, I believe, has given some folks cause to be less open as in blog like they use to.

I decided that photos, quotes and a few words is the direction I will take.
I hope you continue to blog. It isn't quite a full summer without seeing photos of your table set in your lovely garden :)

  3. Dear Loree - I would so miss your posts dear one. I too have found it much more challenging to keep writing a blog but would feel lost without all my online blogging buddies. Yes, there are fewer visitors but am thinking those who visit regularly are more valuable than the "number" who stop by.

I am sorry to read that Malta is changing...it appears that more and more lovely spots are being bought up by big corporations.

Hope you find some inspiration and keep on sharing your writing and photos. It is always such a delight to visit you. Enjoy your reading. Just finished the Rose Code by Kate Quinn - it was about Bletchley Park during WWII. Good story based on true events.
    Hugs!

  4. Good Morning dear Loree, hoping this will be a wonderful day for you in your beautiful home. Your photos are gorgeous, reminding me of my all too short visit to Malta, and stirring thoughts of how wonderful it would be to return some day! Cruise ships are 'stoking their furnaces' again and calling/sending brochures daily now, haha!!!!

Yes, I feel exactly the way you do regarding blogging and might be ready to call it a day in the near future! I also have an IG a/c since earlier this year - my granddaughter set it up thinking I should share my photos - however I'm finding that has already changed from looking at pretty squares into those often horrendous reels etc. which I have no interest in viewing! As I don't advertise on my blog, never have, and do enjoy writing, but feel I will have to make some changes if I decide to keep going.
We won't be traveling as much - getting a bit long in the tooth! - and I really don't even take as many local photos (house, garden etc.) to share anymore as they seem rather repetitious and perhaps I'm becoming boring! Blogging is so different from when we long timers started - and although I still have Followers from way back whom I do enjoy keeping up with, new viewers are usually 'one and done' quickly!
Thinking of you and hope we can always stay in touch no matter what we decide to do moving forward.
    Sending hugs - Mary x

  5. I would also miss your photos, Loree! They may feel like the same old haunts to you but they're always new to anyone who visits here for the first time. Anyway, it's like having art at home - one, hopefully, never tires of looking at the same painting on the wall! Plus, you'll be travelling again, one day, and that might give you inspiration. But you and others have been in this sphere for a long time, so ennui is likely to result from time to time.

I like blogs richer in variety and visual detail, and infrequency of offering means they can be savoured when they do come along. As for instagram, I dipped my toe into it for a bit, mostly as a watcher than a doer, and I quickly found the bombarding nature of it too much and the beautiful images I initially sought became lost in the blur. Less is definitely more, for me!

  6. Hi Loree, first visit to your lovely blog :) LA CONTESSA suggested you to me and I'm sure glad she did. Your photos are gorgeous. I'm also a writer/blogger/avid reader. I have been blogging for almost 11 years now and have lost much of my enthusiasm for it. However, when the mood strikes and I 'feel' like sharing, I do. Instead of being on some kind of schedule to remain 'relevant'. I've long since given up on figuring out GOOGLE. Ha. It has taken the pressure away. Anyway, big hello from Vancouver, Canada! I look forward to reading more of your blog.

  7. You know I could have written your post ! I thought it was because of Rick's passing away, but no I see that you are feeling the same. I don't read books I have read so many during my life but I read old blogs or my old posts ! I had up to 20 comments, today there are maybe 5 ! It's not so much the comments, but I love to stay in contact with my old blogf riends. I think it is because of the heat which you are more used to then I in my normally cool and rainy country ! We are not at all equipped for such a heat ! Fortunately my apartment is at the corner of the building and the balcony goes around which causes a little refreshing wind. I always invite Adeline my neighbor because she is suffocating in her apartment just besides me ! Don't stop writing, I had the same feeling for a while and still have but I decided to carry on at least for the memes, there I don't have to rake my brain to much. I think I will participate in the photo memes at least that does inspire me to take photos ! I also forget ! I think in autumn/winter it will be better. I also stated that lots of Bloggers moved over to Facebook, but that's not my style I am member because I wanted to see the pictures of my grandson which Dario posted. Now he doesn't do it anymore, but I made new friends here in my town and what is nice we met life in a restaurant. Since the lockdown people have changed, I think we all have to find ourselves again, maybe in another way ! I was almost your neighbor when I was doing my cure in Djerba !!

  9. I hope that you continue to blog, it is refreshing to see your beautiful photos. I've changed my own blog format to fit a little with the trend, but at the end of the day I just write about the same things I always did, books, food, plaid, art or whatever else I like. You need to do what works for you but if you stop you will be missed.
